Daily (er, weekly) resolution

Wow.  Having not written anything on this blog for a few weeks, I have quickly found myself feeling like I have absolutely nothing to say.  Many times, particularly over the past few days, I have thought about coming up to the computer and posting something, anything, here.  But it seems like the mere thought of starting to write a post has the effect of wiping my mind completely of any worthwhile ideas (or any ideas at all, actually).

So where have I been?  Well, I can spout off the usual excuses – work got busy, I’ve been preparing for the holidays, which are all true.  But in reality, I’ve just had a bit of an un-inspired spell.  I recently took an online writing course and one of the first things the teacher suggested (urged), was that the students all begin a daily writing practice.  He clearly, kindly and repeatedly explained that it really didn’t matter at all what we wrote so long as we wrote something every day.

I’m a bit ashamed to say that I didn’t take up this particular assignment.  I’m not sure I have the discipline to do anything every day – as evidenced by my failure to ever follow through on an exercise regimen and the resulting extra ten pounds (okay fifteen) that I have carried pretty much since university ended.

But I digress.

I now see why the teacher was so keen on this particular exercise.  If nothing else, getting into the writing habit just seems to keep those creative juices flowing, even if the end product is not something you would ever want to show anyone or even read again yourself.

So I guess I have found a new years resolution that actually doesn’t feel like a cliché (read: my extra fifteen pounds).  While I hesitate to actually say this out loud let alone formalize it in a blog post, I think for the new year I have to resolve to write a little something every day.

Or at least five times a week.  My other resolution is to cut myself some slack, ie. not set unrealistic goals for myself and then feel disappointed and angry when I fail to achieve.  Oh, the wisdom of age.  🙂

So there it is, out there in the world, my writing resolution!  I’m not promising to post it all online (thankfully for all of us), but perhaps some of it will become a few short stories and that might be a goal worth pursuing in 2014.  Lets see how it goes!
